Six friends get together during lockdown for their weekly zoom call. It’s Haley’s turn to organise an activity and instead of a quiz, she’s arranged for a Medium to conduct a séance. Bored and feeling mischievous, Jemma decides to have some fun and invents a story about a boy in her school who hanged himself. However, her prank gives license for a demonic presence to cross over, taking on the guise of the boy in Jemma’s made-up story. The friends begin noticing strange occurrences in their homes as the evil presence begins to make itself known, and they soon realise that they might not survive the night. A SHUDDER ORIGINAL.

Host (Shudder Exclusive) FAQS
HOST is a Covid-19 Lockdown horror movie. Set exclusively during a Zoom call between friends.
The film was conceived, written, filmed and produced in a 12 week period during UK early 2020 lockdown conditions.
Well there have been found footage films before, which you could class this as. There has also been horror movies set during video calls (Unfriended springs to mind), but here we have something unique taking into consideration the budget (or lack of) the timing and the importance of video calling to us all over the last 6 months.
Yes. Oh god yes.
It is more than a sequence of jump scares, there is an actual plot, the suspense and drama is held due to the realism of the performances, there is a creepy feeling that follows you during and after the film that you are unable to shake.
There are jump scare moments, I may have missed some details as I was watching through my fingers. I suspect I will see more during subsequent viewings.
No. And it is one of those rare gems that actually works better on a small screen, in seclusion in the dark.
Infact to give it the best watching experience, it may be best to watch on a tablet or phone under your bed covers in pitch darkness. Or maybe a dark room with just a candle for light.
True, the film does not chalk up the expected 90(ish) minutes and comes in at just under an hour run time, but the film is all the better for it.
I am sure they could have put in another half hour of material, but it would have been just padding. As the finished product stands it is a tight tense 50+ minutes. With the small cast and small number of locations it was the best call to not extend to ‘feature length’ and sacrifice the pacing.
Infact the worst thing I think The Blair Witch Project did was be 30 minutes too long and the makers have not fallen into that same trap
